Westwood Elem. Large Motor Equipment $5000

To purchase large motor equipment for use while Westwood’s outdoor play area was under construction for the building of Edgewood School.

SPRING 2006

Literature Support $1000

To continue building a library of novels and picture book titles for 6th graders to use in guided, shared, and independent reading and to demonstrate authors’ craft in writer’s workshop.

Global Studies Novels $2700

To purchase novels from around the world to promote literacy and cultural awareness, develop historical analysis skills, and help create personal experiences to further historical comprehension for high school students.

Digital Video & Photo Integration $800

To create a child-friendly digital video and photography program in a first-grade classroom to expose students to a wide variety of creative methods for expressing themselves and to drive parental involvement as parents are invited to view work daily on the classroom website.

Honor Retirees with Books $400

To purchase a book in honor of each District 719 retiree, chosen by the retiree, to be placed in one of the school libraries.

Nature Center Transportation $600

To provide transportation for WestWood and Grainwood 3rd grade students to the Five Hawks Nature Center to enhance environmental education by experiencing the diversity among plants and organisms, understanding the use of science in nature, and by observing organisms’ patterns of behavior.

Earth Stewards $1043

To implement a recycling program at Jeffers Elementary that teaches children to identify waste and resources, understand problems caused by waste, and distinguish between recyclable and non-recyclable products which overall instills a sense of environmental responsibility that these children can take into their homes as well.

First Grade Book Worms $750

To build first-grade classroom libraries at Grainwood to accommodate the reading levels of all students enabling them to progress through reading levels successfully and establish a strong foundation of life-long reading skills.

DSC Kids Corner $1000

To create a small, welcoming area with books, puzzles, and small furniture for children of district families and staff seeking assistance at the newly remodeled District Services Center.

The Listening Program $600

To fund this music-based auditory stimulation method for Special Education students that trains the brain to improve the auditory skills needed to effectively listen, learn and communicate.

Mural Project $750

To create an all-school mural painting incorporating the Glendale’s learning festival them: One World, Many Children; celebrating diversity and involving the students in the designing, painting and presenting of the finished product.

Essential Study Skills $2000

To begin a Study Skills curriculum targeting 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to teach, practice and utilize study skill strategies to improve their current success and carry good study skills through high school and beyond.

Environmental Awareness $3126

To create environmental awareness by implementing a recycling program at Grainwood, WestWood, and Edgewood facilitated by teams of Junior Naturalists at each school.

Middle School Junior Great Books $1125

To fund the 7th grade Junior Great Books Curriculum, a literature-based program of interpretive reading, writing, and discussion, which promotes students’ ability to reason, solve problems, apply knowledge and write and communicate effectively.

Parent Resource Libraries $2700

To establish a parent resource library in each school building to provide families with a variety of helpful tools for parenting issues and concerns.

Destination Imagination $370

To provide funds for WestWood Destination Imagination teams to give students the opportunity to participate in an extracurricular activity promoting creativity, team-based problem solving, and life skills.

Summer School Transportation $2190

To provide transportation to this year’s centralized summer school location since children will be unable to walk to their neighbor schools to attend due to construction.
